Image:20050613-018-brassica.jpgRapeseed or Canola as the name was registered by the Western Canadian oilseed crushers association is a oilseed that delivers an interesting oil with positive characteristics for the production of biodiesel. The plant does well in temperate climates and can withstand the lowest temperatures and winter conditions that characterise this climate. It is imperative however to carefully pick the time to harvest rapeseeds as it does easily stress in hotter conditions.

The properties of the oil deriving from the oilseeds is very suitable for biodiesel production and therefore rapeseed oil is currently the primary source to fabricate biodiesel in Europe.

Rapeseeds produce approximately 600 up to 1200 kilos of oil per hectare and is comparable to castor seed and Camelina. Unfortunately rapeseeds require good and fertile agricultural ground and need irrigation in dryer conditions. This renders the crop a competitor to the food supply chain hence according to European standards rapeseeds are not considered to be a sustainable renewable energy source.
